I win!!!!
Last night was pure hell. No wait, it deserves capitals for sure…it was pure HELL!!! Poison Control, a trip from the Fire Department, and a trip to the ER. Not fun!
Yesterday afternoon I ran upstairs for a couple of minutes and came back down to find both babies happily playing on the floor. What were they playing with you ask? That would be Excedrine Migraine….an entire bottle opened and pills everywhere including their mouths. Those tamper proof lid thingies…not so tamper proof it seems.
After calling Poison Control and having the Fire Department evaluate them both they determined that the amount missing from the bottle (3 1/2 pills) should not be toxic and just keep an eye on the babies from home….however, if we noticed any vomiting or strange behavior we should go to the emergency room.
Luckily there was no vomiting, but Shenzie was out of control spastic…like a maniac and then screaming and crying uncontrollably for what felt like ever. Jeff decided we should take her to the ER so I packed her up and off we went.
Let me just say that the entire ER visit was very traumatic for Shenzie Bear (and Mama as well). Four hours later we were sent home with a clean bill of health. Her asprin and acetaminiphine levels were high, but not toxic so we were free to go.
1am and Shenzie was still awake….so overtired and traumatized that she couldn’t sleep. Poor girl. Her arms are very likely bruised up from the three different needles they poked her with because they couldn’t find her vein. Me and three other nurses had to hold her down for 30 minutes while they poked and prodded her crying, screaming, thrashing body. It was the worst experience she has ever had and seriously I almost grabbed her and ran out of there. Screw the needles and blood test, she was hysterical and I was nearly there myself.
There is nothing worse than seeing your baby in pain and scared and not being able to do anything about it. And the worst part is I’m the one who left the bottle within reach of the babies….Never be as stupid as me and leave anything within your babies reach. Tamper proof is so NOT tamper proof and the ER sucks!

OMG!!! Lesley I’m so sorry to hear about what happened. I’m so happy they are okay. Gosh, the ER really does suck. We had a similar experience with a blood draw with Gabby last week, they couldn’t find her vein and she was crying so hard it seemed like a seizure. Hope today is going better for you and the crazies. Take care!

Lesley………Jeff and his twin sister made an emergency trip to the ER when they were
a little older than Shenzie and Heaten. I usually kept all over the counter, and
other meds. in a cardboard box in the top of the hall closet, but one night I got up
with a headache and brought them down, and neglected to put them back. Shortly after
the kids got up, they were very quiet upstairs. When I checked, they had three bottles
of “child” Corricidan (like aspirin for babies), open. I asked Leah how many they had taken.
She said I only took one, but Jeff took about “a million”. On the phone to Poison
control, and then off to ER at Rocky Hospital. They were given something to empty their
stomachs, and sent home. I had a visit from Public Health…..two days later, to check
to make sure our home was “safe”…….
Jeff’s cousin Mike drank some dish washing detergent……it seems to be a part of
parenting to have to phone Poison Control.
Glad the kids are okay, and hope you and Jeff have levelled out. It is a scary ex
perience.

How scary. I am so glad they are ok, and you too. You are not the first mom to leave things within reach of a baby. Don’t be to hard on yourself.

How awful for all of you. I’m so sorry. I hope today was less eventful. I hope
you all get some much needed rest and are doing okay.

India once drank a half of a bottle of mouthwash. Same thing for me…. poison control and then ER. Luckily is wasn’t enough to effect her in any way at all. She also swallowed a necklace once, but the doc said to call if I don’t see it in her diaper shortly…
It happens. It won’t be the last time something crazy happens. We are human, crazy, tired, normal, overworked, moms… Don’t beat yourself up. They are just as lucky to have you as you are to have you are them.

All’s well that ends well, right? So sorry you had such a scare. Don’t beat yourself up over this - you are doing a great job with those babies. Hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving!

In the end all that matters is that everyone is safe and healthy. Everyone has their scary moments. You did all the right things and the next day everyone was fine. Give yourself a deserved break!

Gosh, so sorry you had to go through it. No Mom is perfect; it’s so hard to keep
them safe always. Glad everything turned out OK. I”ve been through the needle search
before with both of my girls. It was awful. Just awful.
